COATINET aims to develop a suite of informatics tools that will allow a distributed
"Coating Information Systems" (CIS) to be developed across multiple servers
connected to the internet.COATINET will build on the experience and software tools developed as part of OCEAN
(Open Corrosion Expertise Access Network), but will modify the metadata descriptors
to focus on the need of the European Coating industry.It is important that all partners,
information providers and end-users accept that coating information resources
adopt a standard framework, thus the metadata files describe the information
sources (coating information in this case) such that the resources can be found
(identified0, retrieved (accessed) and used.
Thus Metadata is data about data and describes the structure of the data
allowing the electronic management, organisation, searching and retrieval of
any particular piece of data.
A major aim of the thematic
network is to agree what information should be available, how it can be
maintained, searched and retrieved.
This requires the definition of a set of termalogy for the metadata (in
effect a vocabulary of searchable metadata elements) that allows the coating
data to be successfully stored, searched and recovered.Much of this work has already been completed within OCEAN
(for corrosion data) but requires the adoption and modification to fit/support
coating data.
